Description: A portrait of a Young Nobleman looking to his right, wearing a red, gold trimmed jacket and a white cravat over gold trimmed armour. It is an oil on copper, probably early 18th or late 17th century English school. This portrait is painted on an oval piece of copper which was often the medium used for small paintings of this kind up until the 18th century. This portrait, which shows the young man wearing both armour and a dark coloured, full bottom wig would have to be very early in the 18th or possibly late 17th century since fashions changed in the early part of 18th century (the wig would have been powdered white). We can not identify the painter but very small portraits of this size were usually copies of larger full-size works and turned out by the original painter's assistants. They were often intended to be gifts to the various members of the Sitter's family. Many of these assistants became famous painters themselves later in life. The copper plate, which is used as the base for this painting, is cut from an old hand engraved printing plate of a map. Still visible on the back of the plate, around the borders, are the names of some English counties. The dark, thick and undisturbed patina on the back of the plate collaborates the dating of this picture. Dimensions: Oval size 5" (12.5 cm) x 6.75" (17 cm). Condition: Excellent condition.
